Autophagy is your cells' recycling program, and fasting is one way to ramp it up. Here's what's real, what's overhyped, and what breaks it.
What autophagy actually is
Autophagy ("self-eating") is a normal cellular housekeeping process: cells break down damaged parts and recycle the components. It runs at a low level all the time and increases when energy is scarce — which is why fasting, exercise, and sleep all nudge it upward. It won the researchers a Nobel Prize in 2016, which is partly why the internet fell in love with it.
When does fasting ramp it up?
Honestly: nobody can give you a precise clock, and most human data is indirect. The rough picture is that autophagy increases as your fast lengthens and as glycogen and insulin fall — commonly discussed in the 16–24 hour range, building further beyond that. Anyone quoting an exact hour is guessing. Longer, more consistent fasts do more than a single heroic one.
What breaks it
Autophagy is suppressed mainly by eating — especially protein and carbohydrate, which raise insulin and signal "energy is here." That's the practical rule:
- Calories with protein or carbs → interrupts the fasted state
- Black coffee, plain tea, water → won't meaningfully break it
- A splash of cream → small, but it's no longer a strict fast
How to encourage it without overdoing it
You don't need extreme multi-day fasts to benefit. Consistent daily fasting (16:8 or 18:6), decent sleep, and regular exercise all support the same cellular clean-up — and they're sustainable. Chasing ever-longer fasts for "more autophagy" has real downside risk and little proven extra payoff.
